Pelješac peninsula – Croatia



Though its earlier years are shrouded in mystery, the sparsely populated but beautiful Pelješac peninsula was first mentioned by Greek writers and was once known as the Roman province of Dalmatia. After the fall of the Byzantium Empire, the area went through a varied series of rulers. The land was eventually purchased by the Republic of Ragusa which was based in Dubrovnik, and remained a part of this conglomerate for the next 250 years.
